4 Simple Steps to Becoming a Morning Person

Becoming a morning person can be easier said than done, but by implementing these 4 tips you will be one step closer to achieving that goal and feeling more energized for your day!

How many times have you set your alarm extra early to get a head start on the day, but end up just pressing snooze? Do you feel super motivated the night before to wake up early, but once your alarm goes off it all has gone out the window? If this sounds like you - I am here to help!

Pick a week - make it a NON-NEGOTIABLE

Choose a set week where you will choose to wake up earlier. (You could start with 30 minutes earlier, or even an hour!) Once you have your week - PREPARE! Get yourself excited about it. Tell yourself that you WILL do this for at least one entire week straight to see how it makes you feel. Put it on the same level as brushing your teeth or showering - a non-negotiable; something you must do.

When I started on my journey to converting myself to a morning person, I picked my week and stuck with it no matter what. I was so over working out after work - when I also had to worry about cooking dinner, cleaning, laundry, etc. in the evenings it was the last thing I felt like doing most days. I told myself I was just going to try waking up earlier for one week, and if I absolutely hated it, I could go back to my old routine.

After that one week - I WAS SOLD. I seriously never looked back and ever since I have continued to be a morning person! Some days are harder than others, but it has been so worth it and it's one of the best decisions I have ever made!

Write out a schedule

Physically write out a detailed schedule of what your morning needs to look like for you to stay on track/on time for your day. If you have to be at work at 8:30am, write every single step in your morning routine and how long it will take you to complete where you can be at work on time. This way you can see exactly how early you should start waking up to complete all your tasks.

Example:

5:20am: Alarm

5:20am - 5:30am: Brush teeth / Put contacts in / Change into workout clothes

5:30am - 6:00am: Workout

6:00am - 6:15am: Shower

6:15am - 6:20am: Make protein shake

6:20am - 7:00am: Blow dry hair / Do makeup

7:00am - 7:05am: Get dressed

7:05am - 7:45am: Misc. (Make breakfast / Journal / Make tea / Read / etc.)

7:45am: Leave for work

Keep your schedule handy in the morning so you can make sure you are staying on track. If you notice you are falling behind, figure out where you can cut corners to get back on track! Maybe skip the blow dryer and do a braid... skip your full makeup routine and do a quick, more natural look... grab a healthy breakfast bar instead of making eggs and toast, etc.

PRO TIP: Go a step further and go online to design something super cute or draw it out on a piece of card stock and add in some motivation quotes, doodles, etc.!

Ditch the blaring loud default alarm tone

I'm not sure about you, but I know waking up to a blaring boat horn next to my head is a surefire way to put me in a bad mood right upon waking! Pick something more relaxing to wake you up so you don't immediately wake up startled!

I like to go to Apple Music playlists and pick an instrumental song that's gentle and easy on the ears! It makes waking up earlier much more enjoyable!

Prep what you can

Do you make a smoothie every morning? Have the blender out already along with any ingredients that aren't frozen/refrigerated. Lay your outfit out for the day. Pack your bag for work/gym ahead of time. You could even sleep in your workout clothes!

Prepping a lot of these simple tasks the night before can really make a difference and save you some time in the morning, leaving you with less to do after you begin to wake up earlier!

Ready to pick your week?! Converting to a morning person has changed my life and has made my days so much more productive - you can do it, too! Start with these 4 simple steps and you will see for yourself how much more energized and prepared you are to take on your day!
